Hudson Warehouse's summer hit production of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) is being re-mounted and presented indoors, the company's first foray into weather-controlled theater, at the Goddard Riverside at The Bernie Wohl Center. This Seeing Stars was originally published in June 2013.

Hudson Warehouse Celebrates 10 Summers with Shakespeare and Dumas

20 June 2013

The season opener, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) is 37 plays in 97 minutes performed by 3 actors: Nicholas Martin-Smith, Ian Harkins and Chris Behan. Photo by Susane Lee

“I was walking through Riverside Park one afternoon in the spring of 2004, stopped on the North Patio and looked up at the Solders’ and Sailors’ Monument. I realized that the patio with its stone walls and benches, with the stairs right there, served as a three-quarter thrust stage. I used to hold informal readings in my apartment and out of one of those readings came our first production of The Tempest.” And that’s how producing artistic director Nicholas Martin-Smith discovered the unconventional yet ideal summer stage for his then-new company, Hudson Warehouse. We asked Mr. Martin-Smith and assistant artistic director Susane Lee about the ten-year evolution of what has become the Upper West Side’s most popular outdoor theater.
